Often romanticized by the author Mark Twain, the Mississippi River runs through a land that has provided us many great things including Root Beer, the Teddy Bear, and the Blues. Above all else, it houses the institution that housed not one, but three Mannings (Archie, Eli, and Cooper). Of course, we’re talking about the University of Mississippi, AKA Ole Miss.

Over the years, the university’s controversial historic ties to the Civil War and the Confederacy have forced the school to undergo some changes. Most notably, the traditional “Colonel Rebel” mascot, depciting a plantation owner, was recently replaced in 2010 by a Rebel Black Bear. As you could imagine, most of the fan base did not appreciate this change, so in 2018 the school once again changed it’s mascot to “Landshark Tony”. No, they did not name it after the beer. The name is inspired by what Ole Miss players refer to as their “Landshark defense”. However, the name Tony comes from the late Ole Miss Linebacker Tony Fein, an Iraqi War Veteran who is credited as the first player to make the “Landshark” gesture in 2008.

Having 3 different mascots within a decade can be confusing, but what’s not confusing is what you should drink on Game Day. When we’re tailgating for Mississippi, then there’s no question we’re drinking the infamous Mississippi Punch. Sure, this may be the drink of Audrey Hepburn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but don’t let that fool you. This punch is strong enough to knock you out, and if you’re not careful, could put you down for the count.

Hotty Toddy Gosh Almighty! Cheers to Game Day!
