Civil wars are never good. A civil war almost destroyed America, and an even bigger one almost destroyed the Avengers. But when it comes to sports, civil wars are the pinnacle of entertainment. Now when we say “Civil War” obviously we mean rivalries where both teams are in the same city or state. These battles don’t occur too often, but lucky for us, we get to watch this rivalry play out this week in Ann Arbor Michigan when the Michigan State Spartans take on the University of Michigan Wolverines.

This rivalry dates back all the way to 1898 when the two institutions first met. It wasn’t until 1953 that the rivalry really started heating up when the governor introduced the Paul Bunyan trophy.  This trophy is a four foot tall statue of American Folklore lumberjack, Paul Bunyan, standing on top of a five foot base. Since it’s introduction, this trophy has been awarded to the winning team, giving them the honor of hosting the trophy for as long as they keep winning. Michigan leads this trophy series with a record of 37 – 27 – 2.

Whether you’re a Wolverine or a Spartan, the stakes are high this upcoming Game Day, which means you’re gonna need a little something to take the edge off. While you’re at it, why not something that clearly shows off your school colors. Below are two boozy cocktails to help keep you warm and cozy this game day, even in that forecasted 15 degree weather.

Cheers!
